Team ESSRE RePleNish has successfully competed in the George Barley Water Prize staged challenge for solving the vexing Phosphorus (P) pollution problem in fresh waters that contributes to Harmful Algal Blooms in Lake Erie. The team advanced to Stage 3 as a Top Ten Finalist and field demonstrated at pilot-scale the RePleNish treatment solution for the nutrient impaired Holland Marsh River, Ontario Canada. ESSRE RePleNish is the only treatment solution that is adaptable to all sources or pathways of nutrient pollutant P for a complete watershed answer to the problem and is equally effective in removing Legacy P within nutrient impaired waterbodies such as Lake Erie. The solution is carried out using commercially available products in unique ways:one supplier - MetaMateria, OH - and two Universities, Gannon U. and Michigan State U. - round out the ESSRE RePleNish team. Ed Weinberg has more than 44 years of experience in the environmental and remediation fields, which includes water/wastewater treatment, groundwater remediation, remedial cleanup of hazardous wastes, air pollution abatement, pollutant nutrient removal and recovery, and waste to energy projects. For the past eleven years, he has served as President of ESSRE Consulting, with a mission to lead projects that involve environmental solutions for sustainability or renewable energy. These commercialization efforts include FOG (Fats, Oils and Grease) to Biofuels, Nutrient “mining”, i.e., removal and recovery from waste for reuse with an emphasis on finite resource phosphorus in wastewaters, animal manures, farm runoff/erosion, food waste, or Legacy P in Lake Erie. As a result of his work in phosphorus recovery, the ESSRE Team Solution for the Barley Water Prize Challenge has been selected as a Top Ten finalist among 178 total applicants covering 7 countries and 3 continents. Also partnered in the commercialization of mass growth and harvesting of microalgae for profitable CO2 GHG Mitigation and Hydrothermal Liquefaction and combustion or pyrolysis of wet manure feedstocks for conversion into biofuels and bioproducts with focus on nutrient recovery of residual phosphate. Currently engaged with the Ontario Federation of Agriculture by providing consulting services for the Thames River Phosphorus Reduction Collaboration for the design and field demonstration of edge of field treatment for innovative dissolved Phosphorus reduction at S. Ontario farm sites. Worked with several innovative technologies including in-situ bioremediation and chemical oxidation (ISCO), advanced oxidation processes, waste-to-energy, nanotechnology, and the commercial development and application of selective adsorption media/ion exchange resins for drinking water, wastewater, urban pollution abatement, and air purification. Professional career highlight involved participation in the cleanup of the two US Postal Service facilities at Washington DC and Trenton NJ using chlorine dioxide gas fumigation for the removal of bioterrorist anthrax contamination.
