Challenge Mitigate Nutrient Loading and Its Environmental Impacts, Reduce and Remediate Urban Pollution

Areas of Expertise Environmental Biology, Environmental Chemistry, Other, Soil Science

Skills Environmental Biology, Environmental Chemistry, Other, Soil Science

S4 stands for Shallow Subsurface Soil Spectroscopy. The S4 technology enables determination of the chemical content beneath the surface of the soil. We have developed S4 for application to archaeology and forensics. The "hack" for this competition is to determine the most significant environmental application in the Lake Erie basin that is accessible to the S4 technology and then to parameterize and plan the implementation of that application. The team members are as follows: 1. Prof. Linda Barrett, soil scientist, Dept of Geosciences, University of Akron 2. Prof. David Perry, spectroscopist, Dept. of Chemistry, University of Akron 3. Afrin Lopa, analytical chemist, doctoral student, Dept. of Chemistry, University of Akron 4. Christopher Matney, entrepreneurial mentor with experience in multiple startups, Lyons CO. 5. Lamalani Siverts, environmental biologist, doctoral student, Integrated Bioscience, University of Akron

I am from Oakland, California and am currently a PhD candidate in Integrated Bioscience at the University of Akron. I have a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Washington, specializing in aquatic community ecology. My research experience includes intertidal zone community ecology and behavioral ecology of whales and dolphins. I have worked for organizations like National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Scripps Institute of Oceanography and am a member of the SEAL Environmental Policy Endorsement team (San Diego, CA). I am interested in preserving the aquatic ecosystem and am working to apply nature-inspired solutions to the water quality industry. My current research goals include analyzing microbial community interactions and nutrient utilization to find reliable indicators of cyanobacterial toxin production.
