The Watershed Data Wranglers will be focusing our efforts toward ensuring that we can get the full value out of every bit of available environmental data. Our hack will include developing and deploying a complete infrastructure for managing environmental data in real time. This distributed processing environment will be built in the cloud following the Event Watershed system pattern. We will also be kicking off two programs that support gathering quality environmental data. The Enhanced Citizen Monitoring program will build the tools and techniques necessary to enhance the quality of the data acquired by volunteers. The Monitoring Instrument Toolkit program will create the building blocks needed to build low-cost automated monitoring stations and sensors.

While I have spent much of my career working as a technical architect developing enterprise systems and designing software products, I started my career as a chemistry teacher. I taught Chemistry and Physical Science at Bay High School for 4 years. After that I started working as an analytical chemist studying the composition of flue-gas condensate for the American Gas Association. I then managed a water quality lab for a water treatment company. Along the way I worked with many lab instruments which were controlled by computers. I quickly found myself drawn to computer and automation technology. I began spending less time reviewing the water quality reports coming out of my lab and chose instead to spend that time programming the computers that came with the lab instruments. I joined a company which developed customized instruments and laboratory data management systems. Below is a summary a few of my key accomplishments while working in laboratory automation: 1) Developed a low-ionic strength titration analysis system which completely automates all procedures for determining the acidity, alkalinity, and pH of high purity water samples. The product was approved and used by the USGS for analyzing the effects of acid rain. 2) Developed a powerful image-processing scripting language that could be run on a number of different platforms including VMS, UNIX and TI 34020 graphics processors. Using this stack-based interpretive language implemented all of the image processing required for CAT image reconstruction. 3) Designed and developed the Spectral Processing System (SPS) to perform interactive graphical analysis of NMR and FTIR data. 4) Directed the design and development of the LabMan Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) which industry reviews identified as one of the three leading LIMS systems.

I have worked to implement systems and equipment to minimize the impact of manufacturing on the environment (both air and water). Living close to the shore of Lake Erie, I see how important it is to protect this great natural resource for ourselves and future generations.
